Cala Figuera

Although Cala Figuera in the south of Mallorca experienced a certain tourist boom in the 1970s and 80s, the small fishing village has managed to retain its charm. Just under 20 kilometers from the southern tip of the island, the small town is located on the east coast. The ypsilon-shaped bay of the same name, which reaches deep inland, is what gives this place its special flair.

It houses the fishing port, which still exists today, from where fishermen go about their trade in many small boats. For hours you can sit in a pub at the harbor and watch the fishermen bring their catch ashore, mend nets or repair boats. The people of Cala Figuera have never been completely dependent on tourism. Certainly, Cala Figuera could not survive without the tourists either, but the atmosphere is much more relaxed than in designated tourist resorts.

Vacation in Cala Figuera

After most of the building sins from the times of the tourist boom have been demolished, you can find in Cala Figuera mainly beautiful vacation apartments in a higher standard. Due to the location on the long, fjord-like bay, many of the apartments and also most of the hotel rooms in the medium-sized or small hotels have beautiful views over the bay or the harbor.

Cala Figuera means fig bay and again and again you will find magnificent old specimens of the fig tree in the village and around it. White painted houses or those made of the typical red-brown natural stones contrast photogenically with the fresh green of the fig trees and the dark green of the shutters and the gates on the boathouses. Cala Figuera is an idyll for lovers of picturesque photo motifs and an ideal starting point for hiking, climbing or diving.

While in the west of Mallorca in the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana there are always rainy days until well into February and March, this is rather rare in the east. Of course, there are also rain showers in Cala Figuera in spring, but they rarely last the whole day. So the place offers itself already early in the year for a vacation with extended walks and hikes. Fresh green, blossoming trees and bushes reward a guest who dares to visit the Balearic Islands already at this time of the year. However, the water temperatures are not inviting for swimming in the sea. It is not until June that the Mediterranean Sea around Mallorca reaches the magical 20 degree mark, which for most vacationers is the minimum for a swim in the sea.

In the hot summer months, Cala Figuera is a good place to stay because of the many water areas, the shady trees and the wind that usually blows from the sea. Besides, a jump into the cool water of the Mediterranean Sea is always an option.

Excursion destinations

The picturesque alleys around the harbor are a wonderful place for always surprising little walks directly in Cala Figuera. A walk to the end of the two inlets Caló d’En Boira and Caló d’En Busques is also worthwhile. From the cliffs, the view extends across the sea to the Cabrera archipelago to the south. With the old watchtower Torre d`en Beao on the opposite shore, this is a view to enjoy and a photo motif for a very different Mallorca than most people know.

The town of Santanyi, the main town of the municipality of the same name to which Cala Figuera also belongs, is only three kilometers away. There you will find an impressive town hall, the Romanesque-Gothic Rosary Chapel from the 14th century with a worth seeing ribbed vault, the church Sant Andreu from the 18th century with a famous baroque organ or the old town gate Porta Murada with tower from the 16th century. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning is the weekly market with colorful hustle and bustle of food stalls and such with all the odds and ends that are bought on vacation with pleasure.

It takes a good 20 minutes by car to reach Cap de ses Salines. Neither the landscape nor the 17-meter-high lighthouse there are particularly spectacular, and yet at the southernmost point of Mallorca you get that typical “country’s end” feeling: here, with the exception of the offshore archipelago of Cabrera, nothing else reaches Africa.

Similarly far away on the route to Felanitx is the Santuari de Sant Salvador monastery. From the monastery, which is 500 meters high, you have a magnificent panoramic view over the whole island to the Serra de Tramuntana in the west, the bay of Alcúdia in the north or the island of Cabrera in the south. A highly recommended day trip from Cala Figuera.

Beaches near

Cala Figuera does not have its own beach, which is probably why there are no crowds of tourists here. There are some nice entrances into the water via stone slabs or ladders, but if you want to experience a real beach day with sand, shallow water and waves, you have to go to one of the nearby beaches. The nearest is just under four kilometers away and within easy walking distance: Cala Santanyi is a bay also cut deep into the land with a fine sandy beach and Caribbean blue-green water. The beach is suitable for children because the water is very shallow and the bay prevents dangerous currents. In addition, the beach is guarded by lifeguards during the summer.

A little further south are the idyllic bays Cala Llombards and Cala Almunia with little tourist infrastructure and therefore also in the summer months with pleasantly few visitors.

Not to be left unmentioned is the beach Es Trenc, about 20 kilometers away already on the western shore of Mallorca, which many Mallorcabesucher describe as one of the most beautiful of the island. North of Cala Figuera, in the natural park of Mondrago, are the beaches of Sa Font de’ n Alis and S’Amarador. These beaches are also very beautiful, but due to nearby hotel complexes more frequented than the beaches in the south.

Gastronomy

A real nightlife with bars or discos is not to be found in Cala Figuera. But there are many wonderful restaurants and fishermen’s pubs with an excellent culinary offer and above average fresh fish. Here you can spend wonderful evenings, with good food, good wine, in an unforgettable ambience with a view of the bay or the harbor.

Cala Figuera is a resort for people who are looking for peace and quiet, experience the original Mallorca, but still want to be right by the sea.
